Condemn Obama’s Anti-Gay Candidate for Inauguration Speech

Target: President Obama and the Presidential Inauguration Committee

Goal: To stop anti-gay pastor Rev. Louie Giglio from speaking at the upcoming presidential inauguration.

An anti-gay pastor, Rev. Louie Giglio, is currently scheduled to give the benediction at President Obama’s inauguration on January 20, 2013. An online recording of one of Giglio’s sermons clearly illustrates his anti-gay and homophobic views. In the nearly hour-long sermon, Giglio tells Christians that they need to stand up to the ‘aggressive’ homosexual agenda and help those who have ‘chosen’ the gay lifestyle. Due to his hateful homophobia, Rev. Giglio does not deserve to speak at a presidential inauguration, especially at the inauguration for a president who has claimed to support gay rights in the past.

In the sermon entitled ‘In Search of a Standard – A Christian Response to Homosexuality,’ Giglio makes numerous homophobic statements, including that homosexuality is not a ‘sexual preference’ but a sin, and gay people are not allowed into Heaven. He also claims that people are not born gay, although he does consider the possibility that there may be a ‘genetic tendency’ towards homosexual behavior, yet he likens it to alcoholism or overeating. Giglio explains that the only way to fix the ‘affliction’ that is homosexuality is through the ‘healing power of Jesus.’ He continues on to make the dangerous claim that gay people can change their sexuality through conversion therapy, a practice that has resulted in increased depression and suicide amongst recipients.

Because of his obvious homophobic views, Giglio does not deserve a place in the inauguration ceremonies. His statements are not only insulting, but dangerous and scientifically unfounded. There are many available religious officials who preach acceptance and love for all people regardless of sexual orientation, yet President Obama has chosen a bigot to give the benediction. Tell President Obama and his Inauguration Committee that you will not stand for Rev. Louie Giglio speaking at the upcoming presidential inauguration.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. President and Members of the Presidential Inauguration Committee,

Your choice of Rev. Louie Giglio for the benediction at the upcoming presidential inauguration is more than disappointing. Rev. Giglio has made it abundantly clear that he does not respect members of the LGBTQ community, his fellow American citizens. He claims that being gay is a sin and a lifestyle choice that all Christians must condemn. He also believes that homosexuality can be ‘cured’ through dangerous conversion therapy and the ‘healing power of Jesus.’ A man who spouts such hateful, homophobic statements deserves no place at the president’s inauguration.

In the past, President Obama has demonstrated admirable support of equal rights of gay Americans and advocated for young men and women who are bullied because of their sexual orientation. Rev. Giglio, however, has done the complete opposite by becoming a bully in his own right, attempting to incite his congregation to become bullies of their fellow citizens. He does not represent our nation’s values of freedom, equality, and justice for all, nor does he represent the President’s progressive views on human sexuality.

We ask that you reconsider your choice of Rev. Giglio for the benediction on Inauguration Day, and instead, choose someone who truly stands for love and acceptance of all peoples.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
