Target: Muhtar Kent, CEO of Coca Cola Company
Goal: Make Coke products with cane sugar and glass bottles instead of high fructose corn syrup and plastic bottles.
Many Americans have caught on to the Mexican Coca Cola craze, and the Coca Cola company is cashing in big time. By using cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and glass bottles instead of plastic, Mexican Coca Cola is not only healthier, but better for the planet. With Mexican Coca Cola costing sometimes over twice as much as the American version, Coca Cola has an incentive to continue making American Coca Cola inferior to its Mexican counterpart. However, should the planet and people’s health pay the price for their greed? Tell Muhtar Kent to treat all Coke products equally by making American Coca Cola the same as Mexican Coca Cola.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is used as a sweetener in American Coca Cola instead of cane sugar. Even when consumed in moderation, HFCS can cause heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and more. Controversy exists over whether or not the sweetener is really as harmful as some studies suggest, but it may be because those who defend HFCS have an incentive. The government subsidizes corn, therefore making it cheaper to farm–so any business that uses high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar saves a lot of money.
Even those who don’t drink Coca Cola products are still paying for them. Not only is HFCS harmful in our diet, it’s harmful for the planet as well. Corn crops are typically not rotated with other crops, meaning the soil is only used to grow corn. This depletes the soil of nutrients, resulting in the need for more pesticides and fertilizer. It also requires large amounts of energy to chemically alter corn to create HFCS.
In addition to the high fructose corn syrup found in America Coca Cola being bad for the planet, the plastic bottle it comes in also has negative impacts. Plastic contains chemicals that leak into beverages; glass does not. When disposed of, plastic can take 450 to 1,000 years to decompose, leaking toxins into soil and water in the meantime. Glass is melted sand, so even if it is not disposed of properly or isn’t recycled, it still doesn’t have the harmful effects of plastic.
Despite widespread knowledge of how unhealthy sugary drinks of any kind can be, people will continue drinking them. So it is up to the corporations who manufacture these products not to make them unhealthier than they already are. Tell Muhtar Kent to make American Coca Cola the same as Mexican Coca Cola by using cane sugar instead of HFCS and selling it in a glass bottle.
Dear Muhtar Kent,
Many loyal Coca Cola drinkers have made the switch from American Coke to Mexican Coke, and they’re sometimes paying twice as much for it. While this is great for your company’s profit margins, it isn’t good for the planet or the health of your loyal consumers. Mexican Coca Cola is made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. It also comes in a glass bottle instead of a plastic one.
The high fructose corn syrup found in American Coca Cola has several negative health impacts; diabetes, obesity and heart disease are just a few. Additionally, the plastic bottle American Coca Cola is served in can take up to 1,000 years to decompose and, unlike glass, can leak toxins into soil and water. Show your customers you care about them and the planet by making American Coca Cola the same as Mexican Coca Cola.
