Goal: Applaud North Carolina energy company for its commitment to sustainable energy production
Duke Energy of North Carolina recently completed three new power plants representing a combined investment of $3.65 billion and bringing the company another step further in its commitment to providing customers with advanced, cleaner electricity generation. The utility has finished many other new plants and upgrades in the past few years while retiring older coal capacity in its efforts to achieve this goal. Applaud Duke Energy for its actions to provide customers with safe, sustainable energy.
The first of these new installations is Cliffside Steam Station Unit 6 in the town of Mooresboro. This coal unit makes use of a state-of-the-art combination of air quality controls to remove 99 percent of sulfer dioxide, 90 percent of nitrogen oxides and 90 percent of mercury from its emissions. Its high efficiency means it burns less coal to generate the same amount of power as most other coal units in the nation.
In 2011, Duke Energy also retired four Cliffside coal units built in the 1940s, and is committed to retiring additional coal generated power associated with the Cliffside facility. Natural gas plants like the new ones found at H.F. Lee and Dan River are known for their high efficiency, flexibility and lower production of emissions.
“We continue to make great strides in transforming the way we serve customers, while maintaining affordability and reliability,” said Charlie Gates, vice president of Power Generation Operations at Duke Energy, “just as the lights in your home have changed, the electricity that powers them also is produced much differently today than just a few years ago. New technology will further advance that mission in the future.”
Duke Energy has also invested over $6 billion in new plants since 2007 and an additional $7.5 billion in upgrades to reduce emissions across its entire service area, while retiring 6,800MW of older coal capacity. This company’s continued commitment to its mission of providing cleaner energy for its customers is clear. Sign this petition to ask Governor-Elect Patrick McCrory to applaud Duke Energy for its efforts to bring about a cleaner future for our environment.

Lee Plant near Goldsboro, and the 620MW Dan River Combined Cycle Station in Eden.
Along with these ventures, Duke Energy has invested over $6 billion in new plants since 2007 and an additional $7.5 billion in upgrades to reduce emissions across its entire service area, while retiring 6,800MW of older coal capacity. This company’s commitment to its goal of providing cleaner power to its customers deserves recognition. I urge you to commend Duke Energy for its actions bringing about a more sustainable future for our environment.
