Protest Russia’s Anti-American Adoption Bill

Target: Russian President, Vladimir Putin

Goal: To condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for signing a bill forbidding Americans from adopting Russian children.

As Russia’s anti-American sentiments continue to grow, the country’s latest act against the U.S. comes at the price of the lives of thousands of children. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children. Despite the fact that the United States adopts more Russian children than any other country, supporters of the bill claim that this will both prevent American violence against children, and encourage Russians to adopt. These claims are based on specific isolated incidents, citing 19 deaths of adopted Russian children in the last twenty years, despite the fact that over 60,000 Russian children have been adopted by American citizens in that time frame.

The United States adopted close to 1,000 Russian children in 2012 alone, and fewer than 20,000 Russians are estimated to have intentions of adopting one of the more than 700,000 unclaimed children in Russia. Russia’s anti-American sentiments and “the Russian government’s politically motivated decision will reduce adoption possibilities for children who are now under institutional care (United States State Department).”  This will have a seriously negative impact on adoption in the America as well, as Russia is one of the most popular countries that Americans adopt from. This law will also block any adoptions currently being processed, destroying the hopes of many children and their potential families.

By signing this petition you are condemning President Putin for his vindictive cruelty, in signing a bill that will destroy any hope for thousands of children to escape from spending their childhood in an orphanage.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Putin,

I am writing to you in complete outrage over the Anti-American Adoption bill that you have signed. You have allowed your Anti-American sentiments to destroy the lives of thousands of children that will now be left without families. The United States has been the top country for adopting Russian children, giving them homes when they would otherwise be left to rot in your less than ideal orphanages. While supporters of your bill are convinced that this will encourage more Russian citizens to adopt, there is no way the numbers will come close to where they were before this bill was passed.

Your supporters have cited a few isolated incidents of violence as reasoning for this bill, yet Americans have adopted over 60,000 of your children over the past twenty years. You are taking vulnerable children and leaving them in the hands of the state instead of the hands of loving families. You are depriving these children of a future, simply for your own political agenda. Your actions have proven to be both ruthless and cruel, and you should be condemned for signing this bill.  I urge you to consider the lives of Russia’s children, and repeal the Anti-American Adoption bill immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

What quality of life do these abandoned kids have to look forward to? Why not give them the chance that every child deserves?

  2. Russian Government Officials: You have been given a responsibility by the people to care for the people. This was granted to you with the hope and expectations that you would stand up, be brave and be counted. Please do so. Please be so.
