Applaud Energy Companies for Opening Kansas’s Largest Wind Farm

Target: Governor of Kansas, Sam Brownback

Goal: Applaud BP Wind Energy and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power for bringing the largest wind farm in Kansas to commercial operations.

Sempra U.S. Gas & Power and BP Wind Energy have partnered in a joint venture to construct the largest wind farm in Kansas, known as Flat Ridge 2, set to be complete by the end of 2012. The project’s 274 wind turbines will generate a total of 438MW of clean carbon dioxide-free energy. Applaud these two organizations for their work to provide renewable solutions to keep our environment safe.

The Flat Ridge 2 site spans 60,000 acres of land, blanketing parts of Harper, Barber, Kingman and Sumner counties in southern Kansas. With each turbine generating 1.6MW, the full installation will provide enough electricity to power 160,000 typical homes. Not only is this venture the largest wind farm in Kansas, it is the largest ever to be constructed all at once, rather than in multiple phases. According to the owners of this $800 million facility, Kansas was chosen partially because of its business environment, but also due to the fact that it has the 2nd-highest rated wind resources in the nation. John Graham, CEO of BP Wind Energy, communicated this saying, “Kansas is blessed by very strong winds.”

Including the massive emissions avoided by the new wind farm, Flat Ridge 2 has also provided important economic benefits to the state of Kansas. During construction the project created about 500 jobs, and 30 permanent positions will be required to monitor and run the facility. The leasing of land to BP Energy and Sempra has meant an additional $208 million in revenue for local county government and community organizations and is bringing landowners an extra $273 million.

The work of Sempra and BP Energy is preventing enormous amounts of needless emissions and generating an affordable new source of electricity for customers. It is also boosting the Kansas economy, providing over $1 million to local communities on an annual basis. These efforts should not pass unnoticed. Sign this petition to ask Kansas Governor Sam Brownback to applaud Sempra U.S. Gas & Power and BP Energy for their cooperation in bringing customers sustainable energy solutions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Brownback,

The energy companies BP Wind Energy and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power are set to complete Kansas state’s largest wind project by the end of 2012. Consisting of 274 1.6MW turbines totaling a combined capacity of 438MW, the new installation will be capable of supplying clean, emissions-free power to approximately 160,000 typical homes. The wind farm, known as Flat Ridge 2, spans 60,000 acres over parts of land in the counties of Harper, Barber, Kingman, and Sumner.

Besides the vast amounts of carbon dioxide pollution this plant avoids, it also provides strong benefits to the local economy. The leasing of land to BP Energy and Sempra has meant an additional $208 million in revenue for local county government and community organizations and is bringing landowners an extra $273 million. Flat Ridge 2 is excellent for Kansas both economically and environmentally. I urge you to commend the joint effort of Sempra U.S. Gas & Power and BP Wind Energy to bring customers sustainable, renewable solutions to keep our atmosphere clean.

Sincerely,

Now we need more wooden wind turbines, and windmills — so that we do not deal with the unnatural materials — like fiberglass that make up the wind turbines.

However, the use of wind turbines is a start — and moves people forward away from fossil fuels and nuclear energy– that needs to be safely closed down as soon as possible.

      Good work! Good start!
Good for these people — what a smart thing to do — to harness some of the best wind area as energy.
