Target: Zooey Deschanel
Goal: Convince Zooey Deschanel to stop endorsing Pantene, a product by a company that tests on animals.
Zooey Deschanel is the star of her own sitcom, a recording artist, and now is also endorsing Pantene. Pantene is made by Procter & Gamble, a company that is one of the worst offenders when it comes to animal testing. With Zooey Deschanel possessing such wide-reaching influence, she shouldn’t be using it to endorse products by a company that tests on animals. Ask Zooey Deschenel to discontinue her endorsement of Pantene, despite contractual obligations.
Procter & Gamble has a long history of cruel animal testing practices. Although it has claimed for years that it is seeking alternatives to animal testing, some animal activist sites say Procter & Gamble is lying. To test Procter & Gamble’s products, scientists place rabbits, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs and other animals in restraining devices so they can’t struggle while they have experiments performed on them. The experiments include poisoning animals with toxins, burning their eyes with chemicals and sometimes killing them. The animals are not sedated or given painkillers and sometimes break their necks or backs trying to escape from the pain. As if that’s not cruel enough, these animals also don’t receive basic care while they’re still alive.
Animal testing is an outdated and unnecessary form of cruelty. Technological advances have made it possible for scientists to test products on virtual and artificial human “skin” and “eyes” that imitate the body’s properties. This means that it is no longer necessary to drop chemicals in animals’ eyes and pump chemicals into their stomachs to make sure products are safe.
It’s time for celebrities to stop endorsing products without having any care or concern for the social or environmental consequences. They have the power to influence and educate the public on important issues and instead they opt to make money no matter what the cost to the planet. Tell Zooey Deschanel to take responsibility for encouraging people to buy products tested on animals by discontinuing her endorsement of Pantene, despite contractual obligations.
Dear Zooey Deschanel,
As a recording artist and the star of your own sitcom, you have wide-reaching influence that you could use for good. Instead, you have allowed yourself to be the face for a product made by a company that tests on animals. In order to test Procter & Gamble’s products, scientists put cleaning chemicals directly into dogs’ stomachs and force mice to eat synthetic musk and other fragrances. They also put chemicals in animals’ eyes, toxins in their stomachs, and sometimes kill them. All of this without sedating the animals or giving them painkillers.
Animal testing is no longer necessary thanks to technological advances. There is no reason why a company that can afford to pay you to endorse its products can’t afford to use cruelty-free testing practices. We urge you to use your celebrity influence to educate people on animal testing by discontinuing your endorsement of Pantene.
