Target: Bonnie Raffaele
Goal: Thank Michigan mother for generating the support necessary to make a law banning cell phone use for new drivers.
After losing her 17-year-old daughter, who died in a car crash while talking on her cell phone, Bonnie Raffaele set out on a mission to warn other teens of the dangers of using a cell phone while driving. Her passion and hard work paid off when the Michigan Legislature passed a bill in her daughter’s honor.
Kelsey Dawn Raffaele had been talking on her cell phone while driving home from a friend’s house. She had just passed a slower-moving vehicle on a slippery road. After going too far right and clipping a snow bank she over-corrected by jerking the wheel to the left and veering into an oncoming car.
Raffaele said the most important step is to get people talking about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. She first envisioned the bill when she was talking to a police officer friend of hers. She was angry and grieving and wanted to do something to prevent more unnecessary losses of life. She soon turned her thoughts into action. She, along with her husband, created a website devoted to warning teens of the dangers of driving while using your cell phone. She spoke at schools all around the state of Michigan and enlisted the help of state senators to support her bill.
“Kelsey’s Law” applies to holders of Level 1 and Level 2 Licenses. Level 1 license holders must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or another licensed driver over the age of 21. A Level 2 licensed driver can drive alone with some limits on hours and carrying young passengers. Sign the petition to thank Bonnie Raffaele for using her grief to help save the lives of countless drivers.
Dear Ms. Raffaele,
Losing a child is a devastating tragedy; the kind of pain you are going through is unimaginable. But using your grief to create something that will make driving safer is a commendable act. The effort and passion you put forth in your mission to spread the word about the dangers of talking on a cell phone while driving are amazing. The support that you generated will help to save countless lives. Thank you so much for creating the foundations that lead to the creation of the bill making it illegal for people with Level 1 and Level 2 drivers licenses to use their cell phones while driving.
With similar laws already in 32 states, it has become very clear that the ban should be law in every state. The support that you generated from the public, senators and police show how important it is to spread the word about these dangers. The accidents caused by people using their cell phone are completely unnecessary. Thank you again for making a law in your daughter’s name to help remember and honor her and create safer driving conditions.
