Thank New York Legislator for Taking a Stand Against Animal Cruelty

Target: New York State Assemblyman Sean M. Ryan

Goal: Thank New York State legislator for working to implement harsher penalties for animal abusers

Animal cruelty is a serious issue that continues to plague society. Although there are several laws implemented to prevent animal cruelty, many believe that these laws are not harsh enough; oftentimes these laws are not even properly reinforced. In an effort to show the severity of animal cruelty, New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan has created a bill to increase the penalties for those convicted of aggravated cruelty to companion animals.

Assemblyman Ryan was inspired to create this bill after hearing the tragic story of a puppy named Phoenix. Not too long ago, Phoenix suffered from an extreme act of animal cruelty. He was tortured and set on fire by two young men, leaving him to fight for his life. Today, Phoenix is making a remarkable recovery. Assemblyman Ryan sees Phoenix as an excellent example of “rising from the ashes.” Like Phoenix, Assemblyman Ryan strives to bring forth something positive from such a heinous act.

The bill calls for the establishment of “Phoenix’s Law.” Under this law, penalties will be doubled for all those who are convicted of animal cruelty; jail terms will be doubled from two to four years and fines will be doubled from $5,000 to $10,000. In addition, juveniles who are convicted of animal cruelty will be required to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if they are likely using animal abuse as a gateway to other types of violence.

Although the bill has not yet been passed, Assemblyman Ryan is more than confident that the State Legislature will approve this law. With the passing of “Phoenix’s Law,” Assemblyman Ryan is hoping to send the message that animal cruelty is a serious offense. Sign the petition below to commend Assemblyman Sean Ryan for taking a stand against animal cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Assemblyman Sean Ryan,

Thank you for creating the bill to implement “Phoenix’s Law.” The events surrounding the abuse of Phoenix are absolutely tragic and should never be forgotten or disregarded. I commend your efforts for taking a negative experience and creating something positive from it. Phoenix’s suffering is not in vain because of individuals like you; by creating this bill you have become the voice of all the animals in New York who have faced or will face the crimes of animal cruelty.

If this law is passed, the message will be clear that animal cruelty is no joke and those convicted of animal abuse will not be punished lightly. This is extremely important since the current laws against animal cruelty have been known to be quite forgiving; harsher penalties definitely need to be implemented. Thank you once again for taking a stand against animal cruelty.

Sincerely,

At last someone is starting to take this seriously. I’d like to see a lethal injection given to abusers. It’s not taken seriously enough, though this is a start. Thank you assemblyman Ryan, your heart is in the right place.
