Target: Ali Harlin, Research Professor, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
Goal: Praise Finnish research facility for its dedication to the development of a bio-based plastics industry
The VTT Technical Research Center of Finland recently announced that it has successfully developed a technique for making bio-based plastic packaging. Not only is the material eco-friendly and biodegradable, it is also stronger and heat resistant. Join in applauding this important breakthrough.
The plastic industry is responsible for roughly 5% of the world’s oil consumption. Approximately 40% of those plastics are used in packaging. An invention like this is an enormous step in moving toward a bio-based economy. Analysts currently estimate that carbon dioxide emissions from a bio-based plastics industry could be as much as 70% lower than the current oil-based plastics.
A transition to bio-based plastics could also lead to innovations in other eco-friendly products and business opportunities. It has long been stereotyped that eco-friendly products aren’t competitive in terms of quality, but the VTT Technical Research Centre’s invention has turned that misconception on its ear by making an eco-friendly product that is even better than the current standard. Not only is their plastic stronger and heat resistant, it is also airtight, vapor proof, and grease resistant. Its biodegradability can also be regulated.
Making the plastics industry sustainable is perhaps the biggest step in creating a bio-based economy. It is hard to think of a manufactured product that doesn’t have plastic material in it, wasn’t manufactured on a machine with plastic parts, or that wasn’t packaged in plastic. A material like this would also significantly reduce pollution and landfill size. More importantly, it is likely that businesses and manufacturers would relish the opportunities it would create, thus, allowing such practices to become the standard and not merely an option.
Please take a moment to thank Professor Ali Harlin at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland for the efforts made in such a significant breakthrough.
