Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Goal: List pocket gophers as endangered to protect species from extinction
Pocket gophers, rodents native to the Pacific Northwest, are far from nature’s most well-known creatures. They are small and keep to themselves, spending most of their lives underground. However, despite their unimposing stature, pocket gophers are essential to the Northwest ecosystem. They spread seeds that ensure native plant growth, keep the soil healthy with their burrows, and serve as food for large carnivores. Without these little animals, the land of the Pacific Northwest would be threatened.
Sadly, pocket gophers’ numbers are rapidly declining in the wild. There are several sub-species that have already gone extinct, and more are currently threatened. The pocket gopher’s population has decreased due to rapid human development and agricultural expansion, reducing the animals’ habitat severely and preventing them from finding adequate food.
Thankfully, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently revealed they were considering listing the remaining pocket gopher species as endangered. If the gophers are indeed labeled as endangered, their remaining habitats would be protected and preserved, ensuring a better chance of their survival in the wild. And the survival of the pocket gopher means the survival of the ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest.
Please urge the Service to officially name pocket gophers as endangered and prevent the animals from disappearing forever.
Dear U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
Pocket gophers, tiny rodents from the Pacific Northwest, are essential to the ecosystem in which they live. They spread seeds that ensure native plant growth, keep the soil healthy with their burrows, and serve as food for large predators. Without them, the land would be severely threatened.
Sadly, pocket gophers’ numbers are rapidly declining in the wild, and several sub-species have already gone extinct. Rapid human development and agricultural expansion are mainly to blame, reducing the gophers’ habitat severely and preventing them from finding adequate food.
However, you at the Service have the power to save these creatures. If you list pocket gophers as endangered, the animals’ habitat will be protected, their survival in the wild will be more secure, and the ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest will be less threatened.
Please list pocket gophers as endangered. Thank you.
