Target: Dogs Trust
Goal: To thank a dog welfare charity for its annual campaign, “A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas”
It is no secret that too many dogs end up in animal shelters. Unfortunately, most of the dogs that end up in animal shelters find themselves there because they are unwanted. Most owners who give up their dogs do so because they simply don’t want them anymore; the “cute” puppy stage has worn off and the reality of owning a dog has settled in. In an effort to prevent unwanted dogs from being sent to animal shelters, Dogs Trust is having its annual campaign to remind individuals that a dog is not just a holiday gift, but a permanent family member.
During the holidays, animal shelters see an influx of dogs being surrendered. Most of these dogs are purchased as presents. While a dog may seem like an ideal present for some, getting someone a dog for the holidays isn’t always recommended because the recipient may not be ready to own a dog. As a result, many of these dogs are given up for outlandish reasons. Dogs Trust reports that some dogs are given up because “they don’t match the color of the furniture,” “they smell like dog,” or the dog is not “as cute as it used to be.”
With its “A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas” campaign, Dogs Trusts is hoping to educate individuals about the responsibilities of owning a dog. The campaign encourages individuals to carefully consider all that is involved with owning a dog before actually purchasing or adopting a dog. Not all individuals truly understand what it means to love and own a dog for life; with this campaign, individuals are reminded of the importance of doing research before committing to a dog.
No dog should be reduced to a present, as presents can be returned or discarded. Instead, all dogs should be treated as permanent members of the family. Sign the petition below to thank Dogs Trust for their continued efforts in raising awareness about the responsibilities associated with owning a dog.
Dear Dogs Trust,
Thank you for your annual campaign, “A Dog is For Life, Not Just for Christmas.” I think this campaign is extremely important because it raises awareness about the responsibilities associated with owning a dog. Unfortunately, too many dogs are given up to animal shelters because their owners do not want them anymore. Every holiday season, there is an influx of surrendered dogs; dogs are still constantly being given as presents.
Your campaign highlights that dogs are not presents but lifetime members of the family. More individuals need to realize this in order to prevent unwanted holiday “presents” from ending up in animal shelters. Thank you for discouraging the notion of giving dogs as presents.
