Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Implement stricter gun regulation policies in the United States
Gun control policies have been a controversial issue for years in the United States. Many quote the Second Amendment’s “Right to Bear Arms” as confirmation that civilian gun usage should be allowed with minimal regulation. However, year after year there are tragedies resulting from gun violence in the U.S.
First there was the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, then the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, followed by the Dark Knight Rises shooting in Aurora only months ago, and now the tragedy this week at a Connecticut elementary school. How many more tragedies need to take place before stricter gun control in America is taken seriously?
After a 2008 Supreme Court decision invalidating a 32-year-old handgun ban in Washington D.C., President Obama stated that, “if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.” It has unfortunately been proven time after time that this is in fact impossible. As long as gun control laws remain as ineffective as they clearly are at the moment, our communities and children are not safe.
President Obama must take into account the many lives lost because of lax gun control policies. Sign this petition and urge President Obama to protect the U.S. and push for increased gun regulation, and therefore a revision of federal gun laws.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing this letter to urge you to revise gun policies in the US. There needs to be an effective regulation of civilian gun policies, otherwise tragedies such as the Connecticut elementary school shooting will keep occurring.
You have been purportedly working towards gun laws that protect our communities and children, yet it is clear that the current policies are ineffective in doing so. Please weigh the value of allowing citizens the right to bear arms against the value of human life, and make an amendment to gun control laws and policies. This is an important issue that needs to be enforced federally, and you have the power to make the change towards a safer country.
