Target: Mayor of Portland, Oregon Sam Adams
Goal: Encourage citizens to participate in the EPA’s Adopt Your Watershed program on an effective local level.
Portland, OR is home to five watersheds that jointly fill the city’s water needs. These drainage basins are precious, diverse regions that require active protection to ensure that they continue to provide safe liquid. This is largely done through volunteer action. Praising the work of current volunteers and encouraging new citizens to join that community would be very beneficial to the city.
A watershed is an area where all the precipitation that falls drains to a single exit point, where a body of water such as a river, lake, wetland or reservoir lies. These regions are saturated with diverse ecosystems, home to many plants and animals. Challenges that watersheds face are numerous, including issues such as loss of habitat due to commercial land use and erosion, the threat of invasive species, aging pipe systems and sewage overflow.
The EPA has created a program called Adopt Your Watershed to encourage citizens to step up and help in preserving their natural resource of water. Volunteers can participate on the front lines, restoring problem sites and performing quality control work, or do something as simple as spreading information and greenscaping their own lawns.
There are no massive immediate threats to Portland’s watersheds, but they only continue to provide good water with the constant dedication of many hardworking volunteers and government employees. Sign this petition to ask Portland Mayor Sam Adams to praise the work of current volunteers and encourage more citizens to participate in the Adopt Your Watershed program.
Dear Mayor Adams,
The city of Portland is provided with clean water from its five watersheds through the help of many judicious, hardworking volunteers and government employees. These watersheds not only provide us with a precious resource, but are filled with diverse habitats populated with wildlife. Doing our best as a city to preserve these areas is massively beneficial to the entire community of Portland.
The EPA sponsors a program called Adopt Your Watershed, encouraging citizens to participate on a local level in ensuring the care of this resource. I urge you to make certain there are always helping hands to protect Portland’s watersheds by encouraging citizens to participate in this program, and praising the work of those who already contribute.
