Target: The Obama Administration.
Goal: To end the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Renewed fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has put thousands of civilians in harm’s way. The rebel group M23 is responsible for the violence in the eastern city. The human rights record of M23 is horrendous, as it has been found responsible for murders, forced labor, rape and the recruitment of child soldiers. It is important that the Obama administration take a more direct role in attempting to get international support for the affected civilians. This support should include the food and supplies that they desperately need as well as potable water and adequate medical care. The establishment of internationally monitored aid camps would do much to improve the situation on the ground. International involvement could also help the DRC government put down these armed rebels.
There have been reports that the rebel group has promised to leave the areas they have overrun, but there is much left to prove. The United States and other members of the United Nations need to ensure the safety of citizens living in captured cities and rural areas by ensuring that the rebels live up to their promises. The possibility of deploying United Nations peacekeepers should always be considered a viable option given the severity of the situation on the ground in the DRC.
Human rights groups have previously reported that the M23 rebels are being partially funded by the government of Rwanda. This should be another focus of the international community so that a vital line of resources may be closed. Continued funding of the crimes of these rebels should cause the end of foreign assistance sent to the government of Rwanda.
Sign this petition to ask the Obama administration to do everything they can to end the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By exerting influence in the United Nations, the United States may help lead the way to cutting funding to the M23 rebels and end their existence as a rebel group all together.
Dear President Obama,
The reports of human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo committed by the armed rebel group M23 are inexcusable. While the group promises to pull out of the cities they have recently occupied and terrorized, there is much left for the group to prove to the international community. I ask that you and your administration do everything that you can to end their reign of terror in the DRC.
One of the important ways that your government may shut down the actions of M23 is by forcing the government of Rwanda to stop funding them. Providing support for this terrorist group should result in the end of any international assistance that is currently given to Rwanda. By exerting some of the influence that the United States has in the United Nations, we may lead the way on ending terrible human rights abuses currently being committed.
