Target: NBD Nano
Goal: To increase awareness and funding for research into the creation of a self-filling water bottle.
NBD Nano was formed in May of 2012 by four recent college graduates who are looking to nature for inspiration in technology and business. Their innovative idea is to create a self-filling water bottle that would essentially pull moisture from the air to re-fill at a rate of almost three liters an hour, depending on geographic location. If successful, this project could be a influential step towards rectifying the water crisis which contributes to millions of deaths each year. NBD Nano took inspiration from the Namib desert beetle which survives in a region of the African desert that gets only about half an inch of rainfall per year. The beetle absorbs the moisture from the air by allowing it to condense on its back and then storing the water that collects there. In a similar fashion, NBD Nano researchers aim to use water-attracting materials to make the water bottle and then use a fan to push air across the surface of the bottle. The air would then condense and be stored in the water bottle.
Although still in its early phases, this project has huge implications for areas of the world without access to clean drinking water. According to an article in the BBC about this project, three billion people, almost one in two, live in areas of the world in which water is scarce. Although NBD Nano’s prototype does not account for the water needed for farming or livestock in these water-scarce areas, the idea behind this project is sound and could easily be mimicked in irrigation systems and livestock troughs.
The method of looking to nature for inspiration on solving problems with technology is called biomimicry. This was a driving force behind NBD Nano’s design and methodology with the self-filling water bottle. Dear NBD Nano,
We applaud your innovative idea in the creation of a self-filling water bottle and are working to create awareness about this important project. If successful, the theory behind this self-filling water bottle could change the world by helping to bring safe-drinking water towards the millions of people currently without access to it.
Please do not limit the possibilities of your design by marketing the water bottle to just the outdoor market: campers, hikers, etc. This design could be useful to the military and could change the lives of millions of people who live in arid climates marked by water scarcity.
We encourage you to push forward with your design and to push the boundaries of what you thought possible with your original prototype. Do not limit yourself to just a water bottle but use your methodology toward improving irrigation systems and livestock troughs.
