Target: U.S. Congress
Goal: Congratulate Congress for passing a bill to use money collected in fines from responsible parties to restore the Gulf Coast
Earlier this year, Congress Passed the RESTORE Act, an act that would continue the process of reversing the damage done to the Gulf Coast by holding those responsible accountable for it. The RESTORE Act does this by ensuring that a large portion of the money collected from responsible parties is used to aid the restoration process. As a result, many important environments such as wetlands and fisheries will be improved, and these environments can continue to provide important services to the people who depend on them.
This bill passed two years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. One of the largest accidental marine oil spills in history, the spill resulted in extensive damage to wildlife and marine habitats. The damage included reports of wildlife death and mutations, and negative impacts to the fishing industry. BP and its partners were to blame for the catastrophe, and prior to the passing of the bill BP has had to pay various fines to both victims of the oil spill and the government.
In addition to these fines, BP and other involved parties have to pay an amount designated by the Clean Water Act for pollution. The RESTORE Act dedicates 80% of the Clean Water Act fines paid to the Gulf Coast communities in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. While each state is free to decide how exactly to use the funds, the money will go towards restoration and economic development for the affected areas.
Restoring the environments of the Gulf Coast is very important, as healthy environments are better able to weather future disasters. By signing this petition, you will be praising Congress for passing an important bill that will ensure the future of the Gulf Coast and nearby environments.
Dear U.S. Congress,
Earlier this year the RESTORE Act was passed, allocating a large portion of funds collected from Clean Water Act fines to the restoration of Gulf Coast environments. The passing of this bill was very important. The negative impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill are almost too numerous to count. It is vital that the areas and people affected are able to continue the recovery process.
Thank you for your commitment to protecting and restoring the Gulf Coast and the surrounding areas. By working to restore these environments today, you work toward protecting them in the future from further disruptions.
