Stop the Murder of ‘Unfit’ Greyhounds

Target: Brent Hogan, CEO of Greyhound Racing New South Wales

Goal: To stop the unnecessary murder of thousands of greyhounds considered unfit for racing

Each year thousands of greyhounds are murdered because they are no longer “fit” to participate in races. The dogs that are killed are either ill, injured, or too slow to race. While Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) claims they are trying to improve their animal welfare policies, they cannot deny that thousands upon thousands of greyhounds are still being murdered by their organization. GRNSW admitted that an average of 3,000 greyhounds are killed annually because it is no longer profitable to keep and maintain these dogs.

The greyhounds that are being murdered are often in good condition or can be easily nursed back to good health. Unfortunately, GRSNW does not measure the worth of these dogs based on their ability to live and thrive but on their ability to make a profit. GRNSW claims that they do not have the time or the funds to maintain all of these dogs so they would rather “humanely” kill them. These dogs are denied a chance to live because it costs more to re-home a greyhound than to kill one. Murdering a dog that still has the rest of its life to live is hardly “humane.”

GRSNW claims that it is making an effort to re-home as many greyhounds as possible through adoption programs that rehabilitate the racing dogs as household pets. Although GRSNW makes theses claims, actions speak louder than words. Veterinarians claim that they still euthanize an average of four greyhounds a week.

While veterinarians associated with this organization disagree with GRSNW’s methods, they have to choose between the lesser of two evils; these veterinarians can either humanely euthanize these greyhounds or the greyhounds can be cruelly murdered by GRSNW. Although there is technically nothing “humane” about murdering a defenseless animal that still has so much potential, veterinarians believe euthanasia is better than being shot.

The murder of these defenseless dogs needs to stop now. If GRSNW continues to kill thousands of greyhounds annually, they should no longer be allowed to purchase these poor animals for the sole purpose of making a profit in races. These dogs are living creatures, not a source of income. Sign the petition below to demand that GRSNW stop killing greyhounds and take the time and effort to re-home them instead.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Hogan,

The murder of “unfit” greyhounds needs to be stopped. Just because a greyhound is no longer able to participate in races and make profits does not mean it should be killed. These dogs have so much potential and still have the rest of their lives to live; stop robbing them of their lives. Instead of killing these dogs, you can re-home them and ensure that they live out the rest of their lives with a loving family.

Unfortunately, it is unprofitable for your organization to re-home all of your “unfit” greyhounds. Since you are killing these animals because they are no longer able to make a profit, it can be assumed that you have no problem murdering these animals because it is more cost-efficient to kill them than to find them homes.

Murdering these animals because it is cost-efficient is unacceptable and cruel. You claim that you are trying to improve your animal welfare policies but your actions speak louder than words. Too many greyhounds are still being murdered. I am urging you to save these animals and give them a chance at life. Please take the action to stop murdering your “unfit” greyhounds and re-home them instead.

Sincerely,

  1. As an Australian I have to say that many and much of the animal welfare in Australia, from cities and definately to the outback, too many Australians leave an incredible amount to be desired, when it comes to kindness and compassion generally, and towards the animal kingdom.

  2. Greyhounds are such gentle undemanding dogs – I wouldn’t have any other breed. A few months ago we had to have our gorgeous boy put to sleep due to cancer and it was the worst day of my life.
How anyone can euthenase fit healthy young greyhounds just because they are “surplus to requirements” makes me sick to my stomach. The reprehensible racing industry is directly responsible for the unnecessary deaths of thousands of beautiful greyhounds. All those who conspire to exploit these gorgeous dogs are beneath contempt.

As the owner of a retired “racer” I know that these
dogs deserve to be home companions. Any time animals
are bred for entertainment purposes they are doomed
to lead a life of HELL. First and foremost they are
PUPPYMILL products. Their life is better than most dogs from puppymills at the beginning. Here in America if the pup doesn’t measure up it is killed early on. I don’t know how but I am sure it is not humane.
By overbreeding these dogs so the racing people have a good choice in finding a winner leads to a large surplus of dogs. I liked Kerrie Pages suggestion of
bettors pay’g an additional fee so that the money is
available to assist in getting the dogs rescued and into homes.
