Target: Jill Cam, Owner of Green Zone Restaurant
Goal: To thank restaurant owner for providing healthy, organic Asian cuisine at her restaurant, “Green Zone”
Organic restaurants are dotting the landscape more and more, offering healthy organic cuisine to health conscious and environmentally friendly consumers. Typically located in organic “hotspots” such as Santa Monica or Costa Mesa, the organic restaurant Green Zone is located in the city of San Gabriel outside of Los Angeles. Applaud Green Zone’s owner Jill Cam for taking a bold step in providing fresh and healthy food options to a city immersed in unhealthy, fast food fare.
With a population of nearly 40,000 people, San Gabriel’s Asian population comprises 60%. With that demographic comes a lot of Asian cuisine. Though not one movie theatre is to be found in the city, San Gabriel is crawling with all kinds of restaurants serving Asian fare, especially Chinese food. Hot pot, dim sum, Mongolian bbq, Szechuan style, and fresh sushi-all these types of Asian cuisine and more can be found in this wonderful city. One thing that is noticeably absent at the forefront of these local eating establishments is a choice of healthy, organic options. With no Whole Foods in sight, and the closest Trader Joe’s so far north on Rosemead Blvd that it seems out of reach, it is clear that organic foods and the people who eat them are strangers in this area. Nonetheless, Jill Cam set about to change this current landscape with her vision of bringing healthy, fresh, and organic Asian cuisine to San Gabriel.
Against this backdrop of fried foods, MSG-laden dishes, and all you can eat bbq, Jill Cam opened up the organic restaurant Green Zone on September 12, 2006. This was quite brave, considering that four Chinese restaurants occupied the same cramped lot, and that the main street Valley Blvd. already had multitudes of restaurants running up and down it. Offering organic foods alone would cause one’s jaw to drop, but Green Zone decided to go a few steps further, providing MSG-free and gluten-free dishes as well. With over 13 menu items boasting organic ingredients, Green Zone not only provides organic appetizers and main courses, but organic drinks and desserts too.
A rare find in Asian cuisine, Green Zone is a treasure trove of delightful experiences. The food is extremely tasty, customer service excellent, and a little side market of fresh organic fruits and vegetables greets you when you first walk in the door. Providing fresh organic fare in an area traditionally not known for healthy eating or eco-conscious ways, Green Zone is boldly going where no other San Gabriel restaurant has gone before. Please sign the petition below thanking Jill Cam and her staff at Green Zone for their determination and decision to provide great tasting, organic Asian cuisine in the city of San Gabriel.
