Target: Joe Dickson, Quality Standards Coordinator for Whole Foods Markets
Goal: Change Whole Foods policy to stop carrying items containing genetically modified ingredients.
Whole Foods is currently a leading purveyor of “healthy” food, carrying organic items, hormone-free meats, raw foods, etc. But Whole Foods is also carrying genetically modified organisms, aka GMOs, without most of their consumers knowing it. Tell Whole Foods that customers do not want risky and artificial ingredients in our grocery stores.
Opening the first Whole Foods Market on September 20, 1980, Whole Foods traditionally has strived to provide healthier food options and environmentally friendly products. That all came to a halt in May 2011 when Whole Foods acknowledged that it began carrying GMO products due to “realities of the marketplace forcing a shift in the company’s previous no-GMO’s policy”. By touting its stores as “natural and organic”, Whole Foods is lying because there is nothing natural or organic about genetically modified organisms that artificially inserts genetic code (usually from an animal species) into the DNA of a plant.
Scientific data has shown that animals fed GMO foods have an increase in disease, infertility and birth defects. Many studies run for only approximately 3 months, yet other chronic problems need a longer testing period to manifest. GMOs currently are not required to be labeled, further increasing the danger and risk to consumers and the environment because disease outbreaks and environmental damage cannot be traced back to a potential GMO source.
In stark contrast, the European Union has imposed a moratorium on all GMOs. France, Germany, Greece, Austria and Luxemburg have banned them outright and other European countries sell only GMO-containing ingredients that have been clearly labeled. Trader Joe’s, another company that sells natural items, refuses to stock any GMO products, proudly stating so on its website. For a company that has more stores and makes less in annual sales, it is commendable that the “realities of the marketplace” have not swayed Trader Joe’s integrity and ethical obligations to protect consumers. Tell Whole Foods to change its current policy and stop carrying GMO-contaminated products by signing the petition below.
Dear Joe Dickson,
Whole Foods has been a purveyor of natural/healthy foods and environmentally friendly products for over 31 years now and we applaud your efforts and history of behalf of the public and environment. However, carrying products that contain GMO ingredients is contrary to Whole Foods’ vision and goals to provide environmentally safe and quality ingredients.
At the very least, please be upfront with your customers and post signs in your store acknowledging your current position to carry GMOs on your shelves, since you have taken the time and effort to label other items as organic, conventional and even mark the very region where they are grown.
One of your friendly competitors Trader Joe’s has decided to take a stand against GMO products, banning them from all of their stores. Please re-evaluate your current position on this matter and stop carrying GMO-tainted products. Take a stand for your customers’ health and our environment by deciding once again to ban GMOs from your product lines. Whole Foods’ good name and outstanding reputation for a leader in quality natural products depends on it. Thank you for your time.
