Abolish ‘Gay Hate Day’ in Cameroon

Target: President Paul Biya

Goal: Halt future anti-gay celebrations and eradicate “Gay Hate Day”

August 21 was declared “Gay Hate Day” by the Cameroonian Youth Rally (RJC) in Cameroon. Last month was the first annual anti-gay celebration which hosts a parade through the capital city of Yaoundé in order to reify “traditional values”. The day commemorates the rape and murder of Narcisse Olivier Djomo Pokam, a crime which is claimed by the RJC to have been carried out by Cameroon’s “gay mafia.”

At the time of the murder, the media spread the myth of the existence of the “gay mafia” and it has since then become recognized as fact by the RJC. Although there is no such thing, matters are not helped by the fact that leaders do not oppose the claims and that Cameroon has criminalized homosexuality under its penal code. Despite any laws such as these, the creation of such a celebration is unacceptable. The promotion of these values is completely inappropriate. Tell the government to eradicate “Gay Hate Day.”

Dear President Biya,

Last month you allowed the celebration of Cameroon’s first “Gay Hate Day.” Created by the Cameroonian Youth Rally in an effort to glorify homophobia, the day is held on the grounds of commemorating the rape and murder of Narcisse Olivier Djomo Pokam by the alleged “gay mafia.”

As the President of Cameroon, you must denounce any acceptance for such celebrations. Despite the criminalization of homosexuality in your country, to allow any “holiday” which is based solely on the purpose of hate-mongering and promoting discrimination is a disgrace to your country’s community and a stain on its image. Whatever your feelings may be on the topic of homosexuality, there is no excuse for such a gathering. Please stop any future celebrations and abolish “Gay Hate Day.”

Sincerely,

This is so crazy and wrong on every level. I don’t care who you are or what you believe there is nothing that could justify taking someone’s life for the sexual orientation. I believe in my heart that being gay is not a choice but that gay people were born that way, it doesn’t matter because we are not GOD and we all have to stand in front of him on the day of Judgment and I don’t recall God asking anyone to assist him in being judge nor jury here on earth. The gay people I have had the wonderful pleasure of meeting are great people who have free spirits and a love for life and others and they make the world a better and more interesting place to live in. Maybe we should find flaws with the people and judge and convict them for it. Every finger u point there are 3 pointing back at you

it’s just beyond belief that any country would allow this but we shouldn’t be surprised when we consider what else is allowed.I go with the “Hate Haters Day”-great idea.

  4. To hate gays that much means you are a repressed homosexual! I would prefer 3 billion Leonardo da Vinci’s, micheangelo buonarotti to your murderous “IDOLS/IDIOTS” Stalin, hitler, Mao tze tung, idi Amin and you!

How can a country justify a day to hate any of God’s creations? God has created each of us to be exactly what we are – how can a nation sanction an event that advocates hatred? Governments should model and encourage high moral values – empathy, respect, tolerance of differences, and the celebration of diversity, not pander to humanity’s baser elements.
