Target: Spokane Assistant City Prosecutor Matthew Folsom
Goal: Punish Laneva Marsha Erskine for 28 years of animal abuse
A 57-year-old Spokane, WA resident has been earning complaints about her animal hoarding in her home for the past 28 years. When her home was raided, animal control officers had to wear hazardous material suits to protect them from toxic conditions. There were 30 cats and 20 dogs that inhabited the 288-square-foot bungalow.
Although her stepfather said that Erskine wanted to gather stray animals to provide them with food and water, her habitual abuse trapped these animals in a concentration camp rather than a safe shelter. Animals lived in stacked cages and urinated and defecated on themselves. The pets were festooned with skin sores, hair loss, urine burns, and raw exposed flesh. Emaciated animals suffered from dehydration, upper respiratory infections, flea infestation, anemia, and curled toenails piercing their tender foot pads.
If Laneva Erskine suffered any mental distress or disease, she had 28 years to ask for help. It is only when she was called to justice that her one family member, her stepfather, claimed she was only trying to foster these animal victims. Clearly, Erskine had her chance to get counseling, her family enabled her abuse, and now she deserves no mercy; only the most stringent and unrelenting application of the law.
Dear Mr. Folsom,
Thank you for committing to prosecute Laneva Marsha Erskine. She has chosen to hoard and abuse animals for over 28 years, and now needs to pay the heaviest fines and reap the highest punishments of the law for her actions. She had decades to get help, as investigators excused her egregious abuse and neglect. Her deliberate actions to cause pain and suffering to sentient animals are inexcusable.
Regardless of her sanity or economic condition, the intent of her hoarding and torture were calculated and intentional. For these reasons, she is a dangerous person to kinder, gentler beings, which ironically happen to be animals. Erskine clearly committed acts of neglect by depriving her imprisoned animals of food, water, shelter, rest, and medical attention. Please work to show that the great city of Spokane, and the state of Washington find animal torture worthy of severe punishment.
