Punish Woman Who Hoarded and Neglected Animals for 28 Years

Target: Spokane Assistant City Prosecutor Matthew Folsom

Goal: Punish Laneva Marsha Erskine for 28 years of animal abuse

A 57-year-old Spokane, WA resident has been earning complaints about her animal hoarding in her home for the past 28 years.  When her home was raided, animal control officers had to wear hazardous material suits to protect them from toxic conditions.  There were 30 cats and 20 dogs that inhabited the 288-square-foot bungalow.

Although her stepfather said that Erskine wanted to gather stray animals to provide them with food and water, her habitual abuse trapped these animals in a concentration camp rather than a safe shelter.  Animals lived in stacked cages and urinated and defecated on themselves.  The pets were festooned with skin sores, hair loss, urine burns, and raw exposed flesh. Emaciated animals suffered from dehydration, upper respiratory infections, flea infestation, anemia, and curled toenails piercing their tender foot pads.

If Laneva Erskine suffered any mental distress or disease, she had 28 years to ask for help.  It is only when she was called to justice that her one family member, her stepfather, claimed she was only trying to foster these animal victims. Clearly, Erskine had her chance to get counseling, her family enabled her abuse, and now she deserves no mercy; only the most stringent and unrelenting application of the law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Folsom,

Thank you for committing to prosecute Laneva Marsha Erskine. She has chosen to hoard and abuse animals for over 28 years, and now needs to pay the heaviest fines and reap the highest punishments of the law for her actions. She had decades to get help, as investigators excused her egregious abuse and neglect.  Her deliberate actions to cause pain and suffering to sentient animals are inexcusable.

Regardless of her sanity or economic condition, the intent of her hoarding and torture were calculated and intentional. For these reasons, she is a dangerous person to kinder, gentler beings, which ironically happen to be animals. Erskine clearly committed acts of neglect by depriving her imprisoned animals of food, water, shelter, rest, and medical attention. Please work to show that the great city of Spokane, and the state of Washington find animal torture worthy of severe punishment.

Sincerely,

  1. How did this woman get away with this abuse for 28 years? Where were her neighbors–they could not have missed the odors and cries of these distressed animals and why wasn’t she turned into animal control years ago??? She should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to prevent her from further hoarding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. We need animal predator lists with restrictions like we have for sexual predators. Some people need to never be around animals again.

  3. “A 57-year-old Spokane, WA resident has been earning complaints about her animal hoarding in her home for the past 28 years” —- WOW!!! It took LAW ENFORCEMENT 28 yearssss to do something about this?!?? And then they go on to try and put some of the blame on her stepfather, saying “her family enabled her abuse” ??? LAW ENFORCEMENT ENABLED HER ABUSE!!! This is absolutely disgusting that it took TWENTY EIGHT YEARS of complaints/reports, for the LAW to finally step in and DO SOMETHING!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR NEGLECT THEMSELVES!!!!!

    • Dear Trish,
I am in total agreement with your assessment of this whole situation–her parents were definitely to blame in not doing an intervention with this and Animal Control should be most certainly held accountable for their neglect in responding to the neighbors complaints. We also have a very lax and indifferent animal control situation in Las Vegas!!!!!!!!!! All they do is sit on their behinds and collect their state paychecks!!!!!!!!! I think that the media should be brought in to these situations and perhaps they will bring attention to the lax enforcement of these abusers!!!!!!!

  4. Why would the authorities allow this horrible abuse for so long??? What in the world is wrong with them?
She is not sick and in need of help, she’s a cold hearted abuser who should be in jail; should have been long ago.
Shame on Spokane, shame on Washington.

  5. Antoaneta Marin says:

At least this woman had good intentions and the animals were alive. I know she should have asked for some kind of help, but most shelter animals are killed. Is that your solution?

  6. The 2 monsters we read before who made “crush videos” will be convicted for 2 years only in their state. This is just not acceptable and I hope that the state of Washington is not so “gracious” in the case of this Erskine woman…

  7. TRUDY NICKOLS says:

NO ONE PERSON SHOULD HAVE THIS MANY ANIMALS, WHY DIDN’T SHE ASK FOR HELP, NOW I CAN SEE HER TRYING TO HELP THESE DOGS&CATS BUT IT GOT OUT OF HAND, BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT TAKE CARE OF SO MANY,THEN THEY SHOULD GET HER FOR ABUSE OF THE ANIMALS.

  8. Ms Rennie Miller says:

Write to your state representatives to have tougher anti-cruelty laws!!!!!!!!

  9. Susan Scarlett says:

Are we not forgetting how many needless deaths there have been over these 28 years, she should also be held accountable for these also. I am sick and tired of reading and seeing all the sick perverted cruelty against our animal kingdom, I am that sick of it that I am ashamed to be a human being. We all have 1 life and 1 planet to spend that life on, why O why can we not live in peace and harmony?

  10. Patricia Wicker says:

This Woman is Disgusting. It never should have taken this many years to do something. Susan said it all, I am SICK to keep hearing about all this Animal Cruelty in the world, Should be Severe Punishiments handed down, Stricter laws should be enacted sooner than later. Poor Poor Animals that have lost their lives. I am also very ashamed to be a member of the human race!!!!!!

  11. imho, we must look at what can be done to prevent these crimes in the future. the current judicial system has failed in rehabilitating sociopaths. therefore, though we may or may not be able to identify individuals whose psychological aberrations cause great suffering to others, focusing our energies on holding lawmakers & enforcers accountable for these crimes is the imperative.

  12. WHY DID WE HAD 48* COMMENTS ON THIS SITE YESTERDAY AND NOW THEY’RE BEEN REDUCED TO 12 ????????????
PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND. THAT nOT EVERYON HAS THE TRUST IN FACEBOOK BUT SHOULD AT LEAST BE COUNTED ON AT THIS SITE! cOMMENTS?t THANKS

  13. cecily colloby says:

The so called “authorities” are as guilty as she is-28 years of complaints and they’ve only just done something about it! What that “something” will be remains to be seen but you can bet your life it will be feeble and pathetic.
