Target: Mr. Sunil Waman Prabhu, Mayor of Mumbai
Goal: Ban Victorian horse-drawn carriages in India, and rehabilitate any horses who have suffered as a result of this tourist attraction.
Mumbai is known as the commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is the wealthiest city in India, and serves as a popular tourist destination. Despite being the most populated city in India, Victorian-style horse-drawn carriages hauling tourists through the overcrowded streets is not an uncommon sight. While this may be an enjoyable attraction to some tourists, the horses who are forced to pull the carriages often lead miserable existences.
Horse-drawn carriages are already banned in many cities such as Delhi, London, Paris, Toronto, and Beijing. Horses in Mumbai are forced to work long hours, sometimes up to 18 hours a day, without any opportunity to rest. They are forced to pull heavy carriages through overcrowded streets oftentimes without access to so much as a bit of shade to escape from the sweltering heat. Many of them are not provided with adequate living conditions, forced to spend what little time off they have standing in their own feces and urine. For all their work, the animals are rewarded with dirty water and inadequate food. Most of the Mumbai carriage horses have never seen a veterinarian, despite the fact that many of them suffer from injuries and disease caused by their horrible living conditions. Many of the horses are kept illegally, and what regulations there are to protect them are almost never enforced. Horses are literally dying in the streets of Mumbai.
Most informed tourists do not agree with the way these horses are treated. Most Mumbai citizens are against the use of carriage horses as well. In India’s entertainment capital, surely there are many ways for tourists to entertain themselves without animals having to suffer. By signing this petition, you are demanding that horse drawn carriages be banned from Mumbai. Horses currently being used to haul carriages should be rehabilitated and given the proper care and respect that they deserve. No living being should have to suffer merely for the entertainment of others.
Dear Mayor Sunil Waman Prabhu,
Please strongly consider banning horse drawn carriages from the streets of Mumbai. The amount of suffering the horses are forced to endure is unacceptable. Horses are literally collapsing and dying in the streets of your city.
Many other cities, such as Delhi, London, Paris, Toronto, and Beijing have already decided to put the welfare of animals above tourist entertainment. Please follow their examples. Surely there are many ways for tourists to entertain themselves in Mumbai without animals having to suffer. Ban horse drawn carriages, and rehabilitate and animals that are currently being used to pull carriages. No living being should have to suffer merely for the entertainment of others.
