Target: Mohamed Morsi, President of Egypt
Goal: Prohibit the brutal torture and starvation of animals in zoos throughout Egypt
A handful of Egyptian zoos are under attack from animal rights organizations for the maltreatment of many beautiful and rare creatures. Lions, tigers, wolves, hippos, camels, and baboons are just a few of many species suffering at the cruel hands of zoo guards and administrators who refuse to feed them and subject them to various kinds of torture. In order for this monstrosity to stop, the President of Egypt must intervene and outlaw the inhumane treatment of these creatures.
Zoos in Kafr El-Shaikh, Fayoum, Giza, and Tanta are publicly proven guilty of animal cruelty by creating an environment of torment and pain for many animals. In these zoos, hippos swim in tiny ponds filled to the surface with feces and filth that taints the water black. Packs of wolves are enclosed in pens so small they are forced to attack one another out of anxiety and panic. Their gaping wounds are left untreated and infection festers in every claustrophobic corner of the zoo. Camels with tumors and falling humps, conditions that indicate disease and malnutrition, are forced to give rides to children despite sicknesses that grow more debilitating each day.
While zoo officials and lazy maintenance crews would be the most likely candidates for animal cruelty in these cases, the guards of the zoo are guilty of the worst crimes. They brutally prod the animals, mainly lions, with metal rods to incite reactions that will please onlookers, and they provide the captive victims with food only when customers pay them to do so. One lioness recently died from starvation, leaving her male cage-mate to endure future anguish alone. The cruelty that takes place in these zoos would be punishable if only one animal were forced to suffer. The fact that it takes place on a large scale, causing so much pain for so many creatures, is appalling and must be stopped immediately.
Demand that the president take action and shut down these zoos as soon as possible. Ask that he seek to prosecute those responsible for these large-scale crimes and allow animal rights organizations to confiscate the animal victims of Egyptian zoos and relocate them to safety. To do any less than this would be unjust.
Dear President Mohamed Morsi,
Please stop the cruel and inhumane treatment of animals in many Egyptian zoos. Allowing these zoos to exist results in excruciating pain and miserable living conditions for many beautiful creatures. Lions and wolves are abused by zoo guards, prodded with metal rods and starved until they die. Primates and other small creatures are kept confined in tiny cells and neglected. Hippos swim in ponds of their own fecal matter. Each zoo is a pool of festering disease.
I urge you to take action against those responsible for these crimes and fight to prosecute every one guilty of severe animal cruelty. You have the power to redeem this terrible situation and find organizations that will relocate the animals, giving them the shelter and nutrition they need and deserve. I implore you to provide these poor creatures with a second chance to live.
