Target: George Zoitas & Ian Joskowitz, owners of Westside Market
Goal: Remove sexist “men-only” aisle from NYC supermarket.
Recently, the Westside Market in NYC created a men-only aisle. They claim to have created this in order to cater to the increasing number of males who are doing their family’s grocery shopping. They have “everything a man may need” in one aisle, such as beer, beef jerky, cereal, soda, condoms, and coffee. This is an extremely sexist concept and must be removed immediately. Not only is this offensive to women by excluding them, but it is also offensive to men who don’t fit into the typical “beer and barbecue” persona.
Gimmicks like this only prove that sexism is unfortunately still around. While the intention of this supermarket is to make it easier for men who do the grocery shopping, this is suggesting that they deserve a reward for grocery shopping since this is normally the “woman’s job.” Also, who decided that the items in this aisle were the most “manly” items in the grocery store? There are many women who barbecue more and drink more coffee than their husbands, and there are many men who don’t barbecue at all. This aisle excludes both women and men who do not fit into this slim stereotype of what a man is. This aisle is completely sexist and must be removed immediately.
Dear George Zoitas & Ian Joskowitz,
The new “male-only” aisle in your supermarket is extremely sexist and must be removed. While I understand that your purpose it to make it easier for men who do the grocery shopping, why should they receive special treatment? Just because women usually do the shopping does not mean that when a man goes grocery shopping, he should be rewarded. This is enforcing the idea that women should do the grocery shopping, which is an outdated and sexist concept.
You are not only excluding women with this new aisle, you are excluding men who don’t fit into the stereotype you are portraying. Not all men drink beer and eat beef jerky. This aisle is only appealing to one type of man, thus you are excluding more men than you are including. In fact, many women purchase the things in this aisle and many men don’t. This is enforcing the idea that men have to be strong, tough, and drink beer in order to be a “real man.” This offensive and sexist aisle must be removed from your supermarket immediately.
