Don’t Allow Loopholes for Genetically Modified Crops

Target: U.S. legislators

Goal: Do not allow temporary permits for untested genetically engineered crops.

Congressmen have silently introduced what are called “Monsanto riders” to a major agricultural bill, requiring the Secretary of Agriculture to allow genetically modified crops before an Environmental Impact Statement is complete. Tell Congress these loopholes for unsafe crops are unacceptable.

Representatives of the House and Senate have been crafting the multi-billion dollar FY 2013 Agricultural Appropriations bill for so long that when congressmen quietly slipped in the Monsanto riders, neither the media nor the public stirred. Thankfully, alert citizens have raised awareness of these new additions to the bill. These dangerous riders would require–not allow, but require–the Secretary of Agriculture to grant a temporary permit for the planting or cultivation of a genetically engineered crop, even if a federal court has ordered to halt the planting or cultivation until an Environmental Impact Statement has been completed.

Now, Congress is getting ready to vote on the bill and if citizens don’t speak out against the Monsanto riders, corrupt Congress members will undoubtedly do all they can to force the Monsanto riders into law.  If the public does not rally to stop the Monsanto riders from passing, farmers and consumers will have no choice but to watch GMOs flood the market, creating potentially high-risk consequences for the environment and our health.

Add your name to the petition below to tell Congress to eliminate the Monsanto riders from the bill. It is unacceptable to allow loopholes for crops that have not proven to be safe.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear U.S. legislators,

I am writing to urge you to eliminate the Monsanto riders that have been silently introduced to the FY 2013 Agricultural Appropriations bill. These dangerous riders would require–not allow, but require–the Secretary of Agriculture to grant a temporary permit for the planting or cultivation of a genetically engineered crop, even if a federal court has ordered to halt the planting or cultivation until an Environmental Impact Statement has been completed.

Allowing untested genetically engineered crops to be planted or cultivated could mean high-risk consequences for the environment and consumers’ health. It is unacceptable to allow loopholes for crops that have not proven to be safe. Please speak out against Monstano riders and do all you can to stop them from becoming law.

Sincerely,

  1. No matter what the issue, those in power find loopholes and maintain them in their interests.

I would like to see this type of food labled, so we have a choice. I can tell when I’ve bought genetically altered corn because my Husband gets deathly ill.
