Encourage Daniel Tosh to Refrain from Making Rape Jokes

Target: Daniel Tosh

Goal: Avoid joking about rape in the future

In a recent stand-up performance, comedian Daniel Tosh began a series of rape jokes and was interrupted by a woman who informed him that “rape jokes aren’t funny.” Tosh then proceeded to joke about that very woman being raped right there in front of them. This traumatizing and threatening behavior should not be subjected on any human, and Tosh ought to refrain from it in the future.

At the Laugh Factory, Daniel Tosh’s stand-up routine took a turn for the worse when he began to victimize a woman in the audience for her anti-rape statement, suggesting that it would be humorous if someone else in the audience were to get up and rape her. Ultimately, the woman felt so uncomfortable by the attack and the looks she was getting from audience members around her that she felt it necessary to leave the show for her own safety. Tosh weakly apologized to the woman via Twitter, but defended his stance on rape jokes being funny.

Rape is a serious and mortifying offense, and when famous comedians make light of it in their acts, it encourages society to think that rape is okay. Jokes like the ones made by Tosh create a rape culture that puts people, especially women, in danger. Tosh must make it clear that he believes rape is not a thing to joke about, and stop using rape as a subject in his act.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Daniel Tosh,

Your statements to the woman in your audience at the Laugh Factory were frankly appalling. It was not acceptable for you to victimize this woman. I demand that you make a more sincere, public apology to the woman and refrain from making rape jokes in the future.

When a comedian, especially a famous one such as yourself, makes a joke out of something serious, it encourages his or her audience to take those subjects less seriously. Rape is no laughing matter. By joking about rape you are perpetuating America’s pro-rape culture, and making it a much less safe place to live. This behavior was frankly irresponsible and inhumane, and I insist that you rethink your opinions on rape.

Sincerely,

  1. I wonder if he’d find it funny if his wife/girlfriend, mother, or sister was a victim of rape.

  2. I personally find it hilarious that Daniel Tosh makes rape jokes. I have been raped, yet I still find his rape jokes hilarious. You people need to learn to appreciate A-grade humor, being as the person who made it is a much higher level thinker than you people. Lighten up, he’s a comedian it’s what he does.
Oh, and by the way, this website is worthless. If you ever want to get anything done, you need to be a do-ocracy, not a group of petition-signing wusses.
