Target: President Almazbek Atambaev of Kyrgyz Republic
Goal: Release journalist and human rights defender Azimjon Askarov
In 2010, Azimjon Askarov was sentenced to prison for life for allegedly participating in violence in the Kyrgyz Republic. Askarov is a journalist and human rights defender, and claims innocence for his supposed crimes. He did not have a fair trial, and is now facing abuse and illness in prison. He is unable to seek treatment for his injuries, and currently has no chance of ever recovering.
In Askarov’s trial, the prosecution had many witnesses, but the defense had none. The victim’s relatives were violent to the Askarov and his legal team, and the lawyers did not wish to introduce their witnesses to this violence. This desire to protect innocent people led to an innocent man going to jail for life. While incarcerated, Askarov has been subject to abuse and torture. He has suffered brain injuries and spine injuries, and is currently unable to receive medical attention for these injuries which can cause serious and lasting damage.
Azimjon Askarov should be released from prison. Because he was not given a fair trial, a life sentence is extremely unfair. If he is released from prison, he can escape the abuse and torture he has faced during his incarceration, as well as seek proper medical treatment for the many injuries he has suffered. Additionally, as Askarov is a human rights defender, he will be able to continue his work in improving human rights in the Kyrgyz Republic. He should be immediately released on humanitarian grounds.

Human rights defender and journalist Azimjon Askarov has been sentenced to prison for life due to his alleged involvement in violence that happened in 2010. He was not given a fair trial, and has faced abuse and torture during his incarceration. He currently suffers from injuries to the brain and spine, and is not receiving the proper medical treatment for these life-threatening injuries.

He has won many international awards for his work in defending the rights of Kyrgyz citizens as well as improving the rule of law in your country.
