Target: Prosecutor Emily Tarbert
Goal: Assign the maximum jail sentence to Justin C. Smith, the man who killed a dog by cutting its throat.
On June 26th, Zanesville, OH police responded to a report of a woman covered in blood. When they arrived on the scene, they found that the woman was not covered in her own blood, but rather in the blood of a 20 pound dog whose throat had been cut.
The woman’s boyfriend, 32 year old Justin C. Smith, admitted to responding officer Sgt. Jim DeVoll that he slit the dog’s throat with a utility knife to get his girlfriend’s attention. Smith reportedly told DeVoll that he cut the dog’s throat because he could, and asked the officer to shoot the dog to ‘put it out of its misery’. The small dog was barely alive when officers reported to the scene, and died soon afterward.
Smith, who had also been arrested in 2011 for criminal damaging, criminal trespassing, and disorderly conduct, had to be wrestled to the ground before being placed under arrest. Last Wednesday, Smith pleaded not guilty to one charge of cruelty to a companion animal and one count of resisting arrest. He is currently in jail on a $1,500 bond. Smith’s next court date is set for July 10th. If found guilty, he faces a $1,000 fine and up to 180 days in jail for killing his girlfriend’s dog. He faces an additional $750 fine and up to 90 days in jail for resisting arrest. Cruelty to companion animals is considered to be only a misdemeanor in Ohio.
For those interested, the Nitro Foundation has planned a peaceful rally at the Zanesville Municipal Court on July 10th.
By signing this petition, you are demanding justice for the poor dog whose life was cruelly and unnecessarily cut short. Demand that Justin C. Smith receives the maximum sentence for murdering an innocent animal. Smith’s act was excessively violent. He is a danger to society.
Dear Emily Tarbert,
Justin C. Smith is a danger to society. On June 26th of this year, he reportedly slit the throat of an innocent 20 pound dog to get his girlfriend’s attention because ‘he could’. Someone who will go so far as to murder an animal for such a unnecessary reason does not deserve to go unpunished.
Smith will be appearing before you on July 10th. Please consider assigning him the maximum sentence possible for his extreme act of cruelty. Taking the life of another living being, especially in such a violent and senseless manner, is unacceptable. The level of violence displayed by Smith could prove dangerous again in the future if not addressed now.
