Stop Congress from Slashing Protections for Endangered Species

Target: U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Oppose extreme anti-wildlife legislation.

Congress is getting ready to vote on an extreme anti-wildlife and anti-conservation bill that would slash protections for the country’s wild land and its most endangered species of animals. This overarching piece of legislation would waive established protected areas, overturn hard-fought rules and allow private corporations to clearcut old-growth forests. We must speak out immediately to let our representatives know that we refuse to let them sacrifice our natural heritage for short-term private profit.

The extreme, anti-wildlife, anti-conservation bill, HR 2578, packs together a series of provisions that discards decades of protections for our wildlife and our wild places. This shocking legislation proposes to:

- Waive Endangered Species Act protections within 100 miles of the U.S. border, leaving jaguars, ocelots and other rare animal species exposed to poaching.

- Overturn hard-fought, sound rules that protect endangered sea turtles and shorebirds from boat traffic on Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

- Allow private corporations to clearcut tens of thousands of acres of old-growth forest in the Tongass National Forest, leaving grizzly bears, salmon, and other wildlife without habitat.

In addition to these outrageous measures, the bill also proposes to waive dozens of landmark conservation laws, including the Wilderness Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. It is a direct attack on our natural heritage that threatens the future of our country’s most precious and vulnerable animals and would have devastating consequences for iconic federally protected forests, parks, seashores and mangroves.

PETITION LETTER

Dear U.S. Representative,

As a constituent and someone who cares deeply for our country’s endangered wildlife and protected wild land, I strongly urge you to oppose HR 2578.

HR 2578 is an extreme anti-wildlife and anti-conservation bill that would have devastating consequences for our natural heritage. By packing together a series of provisions that discards vital protections for our wildlife and our wild places, this piece of legislation would reverse decades of conservation efforts. The bill threatens to:

It is a direct attack on our natural heritage that threatens the future of our country’s most vulnerable animals and would have devastating consequences for iconic federally protected forests, parks, seashores and mangroves.

I call on you to protect our historic natural wild lands and precious wildlife. Please oppose HR 2578 and any other anti-wildlife or anti-conservation legislation.

Sincerely,
