Target: Doug DeRouchey, Wyoming Premium Farms manager
Goal: To demand Wyoming Premium Farms holds its employees accountable for the flagrant neglect and horrifying abuse of its piglets and sows.
In a horrifying video from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), piglets were grabbed and thrown in the air and sows were punched, kicked, and beaten. Many of the animals were also left to suffer with gaping holes in their flesh. The HSUS alleges that these documented cases of animal abuse occurred at Wyoming Premium Farms, which Tyson Foods makes purchases from. Tell Wyoming Premium Farms Manager Doug DeRouchey that a full and thorough investigation into these horrific cases of abuse must be conducted and offenders must be held accountable.
In one segment of the video footage, which now has a home on the Huffington Post, a worker is seen cruelly placing her weight on a sow’s broken limb. The sow screams out in pain as she curses and yells at it to move faster. Another segment shows male workers throwing piglets down the farm’s hallways. These piglets are subsequently kicked into their cages and slammed into walls. They are completely terrified, and it is utterly horrifying to watch.
But according to Care2.com reporter Tara Holmes, DeRouchey has refused to hold his workers accountable for their heartless actions, citing a lack of evidence. He commented that he “needs more than a four-minute video as proof of wrong-doing”, though this short video clearly shows acts of abuse were committed.
HSUS reports that the farm is owned by Itoham America Inc., a company that sells to Tyson Foods. The Huffington Post reports that Tyson is “the world’s second largest meat processor.”
“A company that we own has purchased hogs from the farm,” Tyson Foods spokesman Worth Sparkman told the Post. “We will not purchase from this farm until we’ve had a chance to investigate.”
The acts committed against these animals were completely unjustifiable. Wyoming Premium Farms must take action against these employees and cooperate with its state’s anti-cruelty statute. Thankfully, HSUS is pushing local law enforcement to prosecute these abusers, and DeRouchey must hold his workers accountable. By signing the petition below, you will demand that Wyoming Premium Farms takes swift action in this matter.
Dear Manager DeRouchey,
A recently released video from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), shows piglets and sows on Wyoming Premium Farms being tortured and neglected. Your piglets and sows were shown being thrown, stomped on, kicked, and beaten. You must hold your workers accountable for these heartlessly cruel abuses.
All animals deserve to be treated with compassion and respect. It is clear that piglets and sows on Wyoming Premium Farms were treated as mere commodities to be used and abused at will. This HSUS video is a horrifying testament to how some of this company’s workers disregard Wyoming’s anti-cruelty statute.
It is imperative that you begin conducting a thorough investigation of all employees implicated in this matter. Please commit to taking action immediately.
