California asks Congress for waiver to regulate vehicle emissions as part of any bailout
As the federal government considers bailing out the Detroit automakers, California Attorney General Jerry Brown has asked Congressional leaders to include in any bailout, a provision granting California a waiver to regulate car emissions under the Clean Air Act. Up until now, the EPA has refused to grant this waiver, thereby preventing California, and numerous other states who have adopted California’s standards, from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from cars due to the doctrine of federal preemption.
Under California law, greenhouse emissions from cars should be reduced by 30% by 2016.
Brown’s letter reads, in part:
“For over 40 years, California has had the authority to set stricter standards than the federal government for automobile emissions under the Clean Air Act. For thirty years, other states have been permitted to adopt those tougher standards. The program has worked exceedingly well. In 2005, California applied this authority to greenhouse gas emissions. More than a dozen states have adopted identical regulations.
“Nevertheless, the automobile industry has attacked them at every turn, and has indicated it will continue to do so.
“That’s why I’m urging you to condition any taxpayer assistance to the automobile industry on an explicit authorization for California and other states to implement California’s landmark greenhouse gas emission standards.”

Chase the oil barons off of the boards of directors of the car companies, and prevent them from buying politicians like George Bush! If the money spent in Iraq, $650 Billion dollars, had been spent developing conventional Solar thermal electricity in the South Western U.S.A., Today, Americans would be tapping into the largest source of PERPETUAL, renewable electric power the world has ever known . . . instead, we are watching our economy go down the toilet, with our jobs and futures. We are in debt, YES Yankee Doodle, IN DEBT to the oil barons for a war, lied for and staged to pacify Saudi concerns about Sunnis Muslims! Our soldiers, our children, our blood, died as mercenaries for oil interests . . to enhance the Saudi kingdom! Impeach Bush, nut him, and burn his body in Hell fire! We were sucked in! We can easily develop pollution free transportation, we have the technologies, the science and the political will, we just need to end OPEC and Saudi influence on our government and carmakers! check patents rights, find the ones that prevent pollution, commandeer them for the good of the country – and shoot as traitors any who object! This is not a good time to try to make your fortune ath the expense of the American people, they will not look kindly on you! Last Call America, Last Call!
