Geothermal technology brings clean energy and green jobs to Kenya

December 5, 2008

Israeli geothermal company, Ormat Technologies, which is headquartered in Reno, NV, announced on Thursday that it had completed work on the second phase of the Olkaria III geothermal plant in Kenya.

The project, which cost $150 million, will add 35 MW to the already existing 13 MW of capacity from that plant, which has been in operation since 2001.  Ormat estimates that the project will save Kenya from having to import 120,000 tons of oil per year and will eliminate 200,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Not only is this plant a boon for Kenya’s energy independence and clean tech, but it also has created a number of green-collar jobs.  The Olkaria III plant is staffed entirely by skilled local employees who have been trained to operate this geothermal plant by Ormat.

Ormat is one of the world’s leading geothermal companies, and has been considered a potential partner for Google in the search giant’s “RE<C” efforts to support the development of renewable energy that is cheaper than coal.  Ormat has built and runs a number of geothermal plants throughout the world, including one near the geologically active Mammoth Mountain ski resort.

  2. Funny how Kenya and the Israelis know right from wrong, but it may take the (GRD) great republican depression to teach Americans that they are a “Solar Rich” country! Huge Carbon Emission taxes will build the Solar power base for a restored America, unless the a******* just can’t give up their Corvettes and SUV’s, in which case, the best efforts of the Obama government will not save the average American a****** from slavery to the OPEC countries for another generation. Only time will tell. Will good sense overcome greed, sloth and hedonism? Only time can tell. Will America rise like a Phoenix from the GRD and lead the world again? Who knows? maybe she wants to be a Crow!
