Biggest geothermal plant in 20 years opens in New Zealand
The state-owned Mighty River Power company in New Zealand recently opened a brand new geothermal power plant. The $300 million (NZD) Kawerau geothermal plant will generate 100 MW, which is enough to power approximately 100,000 homes.
Mighty River Power’s CEO noted that New Zealand had lost its historic role as a world leader in geothermal development, but he hoped that this plant would usher in a new era of geothermal development.
This is the largest geothermal project in NZ since 1989 and will boost their overall geothermal capacity by 25%.
