Federal government takes first step towards opening up Virginia coastline to offshore drilling
The federal government took the first concrete step on Thursday to opening up new American coastline to offshore drilling. The previous years-long ban on offshore drilling was lifted a few months ago by President Bush and Congress, after a populist groundswell of support from both Republicans and Democrats in favor of this naïve and shortsighted policy.
The Interior Department officially launched the public comments period for drafting the environmental impact statement for this plan. This will be the first step to opening up widespread parts of the Virginia coastline to oil and natural gas exploration.
The lease sale is scheduled for 2011, and will be handled by our old friends at the Minerals Management Service.
