GM can’t afford to hold a press conference at LA Auto Show?

November 12, 2008

The Los Angeles Auto Show, which opens on Nov. 21, received word from GM that the company would be canceling their only news conference planned for the event.  GM originally intended to make the North American debut of their subsidiary’s hybrid concept car, the Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid Convertible, at the show.

Although Bob “global warming is a crock of sh*t” Lutz, who was planned to lead the announcement, won’t be doing so, we can tell you a little about the car.  Despite its really cool and futuristic sounding name, the 9-X Air BioHybrid Convertible is really just a traditional hybrid car (think Prius) that has e85 flex fuel capabilities (think almost any GM SUV).  And from what we can gather, the word “Air,” which must have been chosen for its environmental connotation, seemingly refers just to the fact that the car is a convertible.  (The plain old 9-X BioHybrid doesn’t have a canopy top.)  Plus, the model isn’t even available yet.  It is just a concept car.

We’re not exactly sure what the right definition of “greenwashing” is, but the green-techie name of this car doesn’t quite fit what it actually seems to do.  Why not just call the Hummer H3T the H3T Air BioFlex?
