Could Texas be next up for high speed rail?
The green-lighting of the high speed rail project by California voters has increased awareness of other proposed high speed rail systems around the country, the most prominent being the Midwest high speed rail proposal. However, another place that has increasing support for a high speed rail system is Texas.
Although Texas is the heart of American oil production, it has also been on the frontlines of some very progressive energy and transportation policies. From Pickens’ wind farms to Dallas’ commuter light rail, Texas has really embraced a number of clean technologies.
Currently, there are a series of high (and low) speed rail proposals being put forth throughout Texas, including one proposal to run a high speed rail line from Dallas to the Arkansas and Louisiana border.
Although these plans are not as far along in the process as the California or Midwest proposals, they could be a sign of things to come. And as we’ve seen with other clean projects in Texas, once the decision is made to pursue it, action quickly follows. Hopefully that will be the case with their high speed rail proposal.

We need to realize that the future in moving people about lies in high speed rail. Check on rail in Germany, France and Japan and you will realize how far behind we are lagging
Yes…America is really far behind when it comes to rail but that’s also because of the distances between population centers that make HSR a viable alternative to commuter airlines. Texans voted against HSR in a statewide referendum but I think the current environment might force change which in the loing run would benefit us all….I live in SA and I know most people I know would love to have a HSR to Austin but the issue then becomes…how to get around once your there…everything is spread out and taxies would kill your pocketbook.
