CA Props 7 and 10 fail
These two environmental measures faced widespread opposition even from environmental groups. Both props were highly funded by out-of-state billionaires and were intended to decrease air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Opposition rose from surprising places, including the Sierra Club, NRDC, and even small renewable energy companies.
Prop 7 would have required large California utility companies to generate 50% of their power from renewable sources by 2025. Currently, regulations require that they use 20% renewable power by 2010.
Prop 10 would have given widespread rebates to purchasers of natural gas vehicles and dedicated money for research purposes.
Prop 7 was funded largely by $9 million given by Peter Sperling, whose father founded the University of Phoenix, and Prop 10 was funded largely by $19 million given by T. Boone Pickens’ natural gas fueling company.
