McCain’s flippant comments on nuclear waste may cost him Nevada

October 31, 2008

Grist notes that McCain’s position on the safety of storing nuclear waste material at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, could be costing him that state, which was carried by George Bush last election.

In particular, Nevadans are upset that McCain was making light of the safety issues involved when he mocked Obama’s concerns on this issue while on a campaign stop in Iowa, saying, “We talked about nuclear power.  Well, it has to be safe environment(ally), blah, blah, blah.”

While nuclear power could help curb greenhouse gas emissions, we’ve noted before, the biggest problem is that the fallout from human error in either the generation process or the transport and storage of the waste could be enormous.  It’s not like Murphy’s Law will not apply just because leaders like McCain say so.

In addition, a commenter at Grist led us to the above video of McCain from last year where he notes around the 1:10 mark that he wouldn’t allow nuclear waste to pass through his home state of Arizona.  Then, on another note, he states around the 2:20 mark that “literally everybody” has judged greenhouse gas emissions as a great threat to the planet and our health.  This clearly was before he met his future running mate

  2. A pox on McCain for his dismissal in such a jocular manner what he must know is a major issue to Nevadans. Been there through five decades of back and forth on this issue. I’ve lived through the rattling of my window and dishes in the cupboard when all these tests were above ground and mourned the deaths of life-long test site workers from cancers and breathing inability. When do the citizens who have invested their life’s efforts in this state finally get Yucca Mountain shut down? AEC/DOE lies
trip over themselves. Enough is enough.
