Santa Monica looks to secure 3rd stop on proposed Expo Line
As the Exposition Line construction creeps from Downtown towards Culver City, the Santa Monica City Council has been preparing for that line’s next phase, slated to run from Culver City to downtown Santa Monica. Until now, the plans were to have two stops on the line in Santa Monica, one near the Water Garden on 26th Street, and one at the line’s terminus, near the Sears Automotive Center on 4th Street.
However, the SM City Council recently asked the MTA to consider adding a third stop in the city, most likely on 20th Street near Santa Monica Community College or between 14th and 17th Streets near Memorial Park. Either way, this is good news for proponents of the light rail system and smart growth. The City Council is already planning to advocate the development of mixed-use walkable districts around the future transit stops. MTA estimates that ridership on the Expo Line, once complete, could exceed 62,000 passengers per day, which would make it one of the busiest light rail lines in the country.
Of course, the next big debate will be to decide whether the train’s right-of-way should go down Olympic or Colorado blvds. Time to prepare for another battle over the preciousness of landscaped trees.
