McCain/Palin ticket moves away from pro-environmental policies
Reuters compares McCain’s and Obama’s positions on the environment, indicating that “Both have made energy security and environmental stewardship part of their presidential campaigns” but noting that McCain has fully embraced a “We will drill new wells off-shore, and we’ll drill them now. We’ll drill them now” platform.
McCain’s environmental reputation has also taken a hit with the pick of Sarah Palin, a strong supporter of extractionist policies, and climate change doubter. Trying to explain away this potential problem McCain is going to have with environmentalists, the policy director of Republicans for Environmental Protection states “Our position is that Sarah Palin really was not put on the ticket to be a policy advisor to John McCain on these issues.” Instead, he argues that she is there to “spear head” McCain’s reform movement. That may be the case, but given the strength of the modern day vice presidential position, and the fact that she is second in line for the top job, her personal policy beliefs become extremely important for the country.
