Los Angeles breaks ground on major wind farm…

February 4, 2008

The city of Los Angeles is getting a brand new wind farm that is scheduled to go online by next year. The Pine Tree Wind Project, as its called, will generate enough electricity to power 56,000 homes and the saving of fossil fuels will be the equivalent of taking 35,000 cars off the road.

As mentioned in the past, the big question for the future of renewable energy sources like the Pine Tree Wind Project is whether they can compete economically with more traditional forms of power. This does not yet appear to be the case, as the SF Chronicle states that “it is unknown how rapidly wind power will continue to expand because energy companies are waiting to see if federal tax credits for renewable energy sources are reauthorized later this year before committing to new projects.”
