In a parting gift to the oil industry, the Bush administration has officially proposed opening up 130 million acres of the California coast to oil and natural gas drilling.  The proposal was made by the Interior Department, and also includes areas of Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

Offshore drilling in the U.S. has been back on the table ever since Congress foolishly allowed the moratorium to expire last year amid high gas prices and election-season pressures.

Although the Bush administration was able to get this process moving, the final decision as to whether to accept bids to develop these offshore areas will fall to President-elect Obama.  It is unclear how Obama plans to approach offshore drilling policy.

Gov. Schwarzenegger has made it clear that he opposes new offshore oil drilling in his state.
