Target: Mykola Azarov, Prime Minister of Ukraine
Goal: To urge the parliament of Ukraine to oppose an initiative which seeks to prohibit abortion, penalize childless couples, and to ban consensual sex in the missionary position.
Currently, as is the case in most European countries, women in Ukraine enjoy the right of control over their own bodies when it comes to reproductive rights. However, these rights have recently come under attack in the form of an initiative in the parliament of Ukraine (also known as the Verkhovna Rada). The proposed law would ban abortion and add a penalty for couples who do not have children.
Strangely, the initiative also includes a ban on the act of sex in the missionary position. An initiator of the bill said that the missionary position has been proven ineffective for conceiving children. However, some activists argue that the inclusion of the anti-missionary law is only a diversion tactic to distract from the initiative’s real anti-choice purpose.
Supporters of the proposed law in the Verkhovna Rada say that they support this initiative out of concern for Ukraine’s declining population and low fertility rate. However, it is clear that the initiative also has the intention of controlling women’s choices, for it has support from religious figures. In an open letter addressed to supporters of the initiative, opponents wrote: ‘By referring to abortions as acts of genocide you blame such women for a deliberate destruction of Ukrainians – women who resort to abortion as a last resort, being in a desperate situation, having no alternative, rather than doing so as a whim. You appear to forget that women aren’t to be blamed for the current situation in Ukraine, which is best described as a demographic crisis. Our population is on a downward curve because of a high death and emigration rates.’
It is important that a woman’s right to choose is protected in all countries. Ukrainian lawmakers must not touch abortion laws when attempting to solve population problems. Sign this petition to urge Mykola Azarov, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, not to support this proposed law.
Dear Mykola Azarov,
We are writing to you out of concern for a proposed law currently in the Verkhovna Rada which would ban abortion, penalize childless couples, and unnecessarily prohibit certain private sex acts. Although we realize Ukraine is attempting to solve demographic problems, lawmakers must not restrict these basic liberties of individuals, especially those of women.
This initiative, if it were to become law, would not only be destructive, but also nearly impossible to fully enforce. We urge you not to support this initiative, and to influence your colleagues to take a similar position on this issue.
