Target: Kevin Faulconer, Mayor of San Diego
Goal: Prevent humans from infringing on sea lion sanctuary in La Jolla, San Diego
Sea lions that use San Diego’s La Jolla Beach are under threat, as local business owners are suing the city to expel the marine mammals from their natural habitat. Even though the beach and ocean are the sea lions’ home, people fail to realize that they are trespassing on sea lion territory.
The seals that also live in the area are deemed okay because they keep to their set space. Local business owners’ complaints are directed toward the sea lions for their strong smell and loud vocalizations, disregarding that smell and vocalizations are part of sea lions’ lives. Sea lion males need to vocalize, especially during breeding season, and sea lion females need the pungent odor to locate their pups.
In order to expedite the sea lions’ departure, the gates that reserve the sea lions’ sanctuary have been opened to humans. Unfortunately, the opened gates are working. The sea lions frantically run over each other to escape from people, retreating to the cliffs. Humans have been reported to harass the sea lions, yelling at them and constantly snapping pictures. Sea lions are wild animals who were at La Jolla Beach long before development of the land occurred.
With many tourists to San Diego desiring to see not only seals, but also sea lions in their natural habitat, local business owners should rethink their decision to drive out the sea lions. City officials should also think twice about their new proposal to completely take out the fence protecting the sea lions. With the fence already being in place, it is foolish to spend more of taxpayers’ dollars to remove it. A solution could include keeping the sea lion area clean, to benefit the sea lions’ health as well as save humans from the stench.
Please demand that the sea lions be allowed to live in peace.
Dear Mr. Faulconer,
I am writing to urge you, as mayor of San Diego, to keep the La Jolla Beach area reserved for sea lions. Please inspire new perspectives in people. Help them realize that humans sometimes have a harmful impact on the rights of animals, and that this in not alright.
The fence that protects sea lions from humans is beneficial to both sea lions and humans. The sea lions can live in peace, and people do not have to worry about the noise and smell as much. Thank you for your consideration.
