Target: Washington Governor Jay Inslee
Goal: Protect marine life by banning plastic bags in the state of Washington
Plastic pollution is a serious threat to marine life everywhere. Plastic bags, bottles, and other plastic items that end up in the oceans can poison and kill many forms of marine animals. In fact, plastic pollution is considered the single greatest threat in nature to large marine mammals like whales and seals. Clearly, plastic pollution has adverse affects on the entire marine ecosystem. This affects humans as well, because plastic pollutes marine environments that we enjoy and it can contaminate our seafood.
Like marine environments all over the world, Washington State’s Puget Sound and the wildlife that live there are threatened by plastic pollution. Puget Sound is home to many diverse species of marine life including 200 species of fish, octopuses, clams, sea lions, and humpback, gray, and orca whales. If we want this biodiversity to continue to survive, and to keep the environment clean for generations to enjoy, then we must act to cut down on plastic pollution.
There is already a push to create a plastic-free environment in the state of Washington, as several cities including Seattle, Issaquah, and Bellingham, have passed legislation banning the use of plastic bags in their municipalities. These are great steps forward, but we cannot stop here.
By signing the petition below, you will urge Washington Governor Jay Inslee and the Washington State Legislature to ban plastic bags in the entire state of Washington.
Dear Governor Inslee,
Plastic pollution is hurting Puget Sound and it must be stopped. Our careless disposal of plastic waste is hurting wildlife in Puget Sound and hurting the entire area for humans as well. We have to put an end to this harmful pollution once and for all.
Several Washington cities including Edmonds, Bellingham, Mukiteo, Seattle, Bainbridge Island, Port Townsend, and Issaquah have already banned plastic bags in their municipalities to address this problem. This is a great start but we cannot stop there.
I am urging you to push for legislation that would create a statewide ban on plastic bags. Please use your political influence to ensure that Washington remains a beautiful state for years to come.
