Demand Tennessee Lawmaker Apologize for Advocating Violence Against Transgender People

Target: Tennessee General Assembly Representative Richard Floyd

Goal: To urge this Tennessee politician to issue a public apology to transgender people for advocating violence against them and to cease similar speech in the future.

Transgender people are targets of more violence than most. So, it doesn’t help that a Tennessee representative is giving the green light for people to “stomp a mudhole” in transgender men and women. Richard Floyd must stop these hazardous statements before a depraved person commits a deadly act against this group of people.

Floyd had previously sponsored a Tennessee House bill that would prohibit transgender people from using restrooms and dressing rooms that did not match the sex listed on their birth certificates. If caught, violators would receive a $50 fine.

Floyd not only condoned, but advocated violence against transgender Americans. He introduced the bill earlier this month by saying, “I don’t care if he thinks he’s a woman and tries on clothes with them in there — I’d just try to stomp a mudhole in him and then stomp him dry.” He made similar threats to a local Nashville news station.

“Don’t ask me to adjust to their perverted way of thinking and put my family at risk,” Floyd added.

Just days ago, the Senate withdrew its version of the bill, but Floyd’s words continue to reverberate through the public sphere. We are calling for Floyd to issue an apology for his harmful and potentially violence-causing statements.

By singing the petition below, you will tell Floyd that not only are his words unacceptable and dangerous, but they will not be tolerated. Fighting words –especially against oppressed groups– are never right.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Tennessee General Assembly Representative Richard Floyd,

Your recent statements against the transgender community are particularly troubling. When you publicly stated that you would “stomp a mudhole” in a transgender woman who used the same dressing room as your family, millions of people were exposed to your words.

Not only is this type of speech hateful, it can also lead to physical violence against transgender people –even if that wasn’t your intention. As a government representative in a position of power, I urge you to choose your words more carefully.

It is imperative that you issue a public statement of apology to mitigate the potential danger you have caused to thousands of transgender people. Please commit to taking action immediately.

Sincerely,

  1. This is disgraceful, he should not be a Representative.

  2. Cheryl Richard says:

This kind of hateful ignorance is an embarrassment. Look at it this way: pollution is causing more changes to reproductive systems across species. Time to stop blaming individuals for differences from the currently widely accepted norm; the norm is rapidly changing. And why shouldn’t it?

  3. The proper penalty for Richard Floyd: Strip him naked, apply hot tar, bust a feather pillow on him, and make him ride a fence rail over two other men’s shoulders out of state. He should then be dumped in a ditch at the state line and forbidden from returning with a shoot on sight notice in all Tennessee post offices.

  4. A class in RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY should be taught from Grade one to graduation, children should be taught that anything is permissible as long as it does not hurt themselves or anybody else. Common sense would dictate that if children are taught at a very early age that every child has their own strengths and weaknesses and that they should use their strengths to help not tease or bully others. It should not matter if a child comes from a FAMILY of a mother and father, 2 mothers or 2 fathers as long as they are loved.
Sex Education should be taught from LGBT, Contraceptives, Masturbation and all forms of sex. Let us face it whether we like it or not children are curious and are having sex earlier and earlier. Children should be taught the joys and the consequences of having sex ( Pregnancy,STD, AIDS ) But you say when will this be taught. Cut out Geography or History early on then put it back in and remove Geometry and Algebra. They can learn this in college if need be. I believe this is a solution. Nipping it in the Bud so that Bullying, Sexual Assault, and many others will be greatly diminished if not eradicated. It is my belief that when children graduate with these principals where they are taught RESPECT for themselves and others and to take RESPONSIBILITY for their actions. If children grow up with these principals I believe business and government would benefit greatly. Within a few generations this world would be a much better place to live in.

  5. I read his horrible words, but I wonder what they even MEAN … I can guess, but …

Obviously the mindless ramblings of someone who can only cling to hatred, fear, lies, and stereotypes … shame shame shame, pity pity pity.
