Ireland takes the lead with renewable energy targets
Articles — By forcechange on December 19, 2008 10:56 amIrish Taoiseach Brian Cowen announced that his country would increase their target for renewable energy generation to 40% by 2020. This is 20% above the already aggressive EU target.
Cowen said that his government’s plan was to create a “New Green Deal” that would boost his country’s economy, increase energy security, and protect the environment. His plan will focus on energy efficiency and investments in renewable energy.
Cowen noted, “As one of the most fossil fuel dependent countries in the world, [Ireland] must prepare for a future when the prices and volatility we have recently witnessed become the norm.”
Some specifics include $42 billion in long-term investments in renewable energy, support to large companies that wish to generate their own renewable energy on-site, and installation of smart meters for every house in the country. Additionally, the application process for renewable energy projects will be fast-tracked.
Ireland’s 40% target by 2020 is one of the boldest in the world, and tops even California which aims to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
