Target: Jerry Brown, Governor of California
Goal: Criminalize the importation and sale of invasive American bullfrogs in California
In California, American bullfrogs are an invasive species that pose a threat to many of the state’s native amphibian populations, including some already endangered species. Urge the Governor of California to criminalize the import and sale of American bullfrogs to protect the state’s native amphibian populations.
Millions of American bullfrogs are imported into California each year, mainly as a food source but also as pets and dissection animals. With so many frogs it is not possible to prevent at least some of them from being released into the wild or from escaping captivity. Once released into one of California’s aquatic ecosystems, the large and extremely gluttonous American bullfrogs threaten the very existence of many native animals. They often eat small reptiles, and they starve others predators to death by consuming all of a habitat’s limited food resources.
Furthermore, American bullfrogs are known to carry and spread the chytrid fungus, which causes the often fatal disease chytridiomycosis. This malignant disease affects the skin and impairs an amphibian’s respiratory abilities, usually leading to death. The chytrid fungus has afflicted amphibian populations all over the world, and it has been known to wipe out entire frog populations within a month or two.
By signing the petition below you will urge Governor Brown to protect California’s native amphibian populations, including already endangered species like the California red-legged frog, by enacting a statewide ban on the importation and sale of American bullfrogs.
Dear Governor Brown,
Millions of American bullfrogs are imported into California each year, mainly as a food source but also to be used as pets and dissection animals. Many of these frogs escape captivity or are released into the wild. Once in the California ecosystem, these large, gluttonous, invasive frogs threaten the existence of many native amphibian populations, including already endangered species like the California red-legged frog. American bullfrogs eat smaller native reptiles, and they starve others by consuming a given habitat’s limited available food resources. Worse, American bullfrogs carry and transmit the chytrid fungus, which causes a fatal disease that has been responsible for the decimation of entire frog populations all over the world.
As Governor you have a responsibility to protect your state’s native wildlife. Please protect California’s native amphibian populations by enacting a statewide ban on the importation and sale of American bullfrogs.
