End the Abuse of Racehorses

Target: Representative Lee Terry, House Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Chairman

Goal: Demand an end to the abusive treatment that racehorses endure

A recent PETA investigation has uncovered rampant abuse of thoroughbred racehorses that compete at the highest levels. These poor animals are worked to the point of injury and then given drugs and forced to compete through the pain. We must demand an end to the horrific treatment that is given to racehorses. An undercover investigator from PETA recently detailed the inhumane practices of trainer Steve Asmussen, who works at Saratoga Race Course and the Kentucky Derby course Churchill Downs. Asmussen was found to be administering excessive amounts of drugs without regard for the well-being of the horses. The PETA investigator stated, “We witnessed a horse so sore it hurt him even to stand, thyroid medication dumped into horses’ daily feed, and horses who had been blistered with chemical paint in a bizarre attempt to stimulate healing. Even at this top level of racing, the syringe is the top training aid, and if the horses get out alive, they’re broken.”

The 2011 Kentucky Derby second place finisher Nehro was subjected to some of the most brutal treatment of all. He had chronic foot pain to the point that he had holes in his hooves. As trainers continued to push him past the point of suffering, his condition worsened and trainers held his foot together using superglue. According to PETA, “Nehro developed colic and went mad from pain.” Sadly, this champion horse was euthanized at Churchill Downs on May 4, 2013, the day of the Kentucky Derby.

Recently, a bill was introduced to congress that would “improve the integrity and safety of interstate horseracing, and for other purposes.” We must encourage House Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Chairman, Representative Lee Terry, to pass this bill through committee, so that Congress can put an end to the inhumane treatment of racehorses once and for all.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Lee Terry,

A recent PETA investigation has uncovered rampant abuse of thoroughbred racehorses that compete at the highest levels. These helpless animals are worked to the point of injury and then given drugs so they can continue to compete through the pain.

Kentucky Derby second place finisher Nehro was subjected to some of the most brutal treatment of all. His foot injuries were so horrendous that trainers, concerned more with their bottom line than the well-being of this animal, held his foot together using superglue.

I am asking you to to pass H.R. 2012: Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2013 through committee, so that Congress can put an end to the inhumane treatment of racehorses once and for all.

Sincerely,
