Target: California State Senator Alex Padilla
Goal: Support state wide ban on plastic bags in California
In Sacramento, California, lawmakers are poised to pass a state-wide ban on plastic bags. If it goes through, California will become the first state to implement this measure. Plastic bags are often used once or twice, but can linger for up to a millennia, clogging storm drains and polluting our environment. The measure is a step towards an environmentally conscious planet, and should be fully supported.
Alex Padilla, the senator sponsoring this piece of legislation, says that this ban will be the first step in phasing out plastic bags. The measure would ban single use plastic bags from supermarkets, liquor stores, and other locations where they have been used. However the plastic bag industry is capitalizing on the frustration that customers feel when they purchase paper bags, where they are easily ripped and get soggy in the rain. Some stores are even charging a fee for paper bags which further frustrates customers. The plastic bag industry has spent millions of dollars in lobbying efforts, and has prevented many previous bills banning plastic bags from becoming law.
There is still support brewing for the ban, as many senators and other environmentally conscious citizens are becoming aware of the dangers of plastic bags. In San Jose, where a plastic bag ban went effective in 2012, litter from these bags went down by a whopping 87 percent. The litter from plastic bags clog storm drains, which contributes to flooding in the area. And while customers can purchase – and complain about the costs – of paper bags, the cost is to remind customers to bring their reusable canvas bags to the store.
Please sign this petition and let California lawmakers know that we care about our environment and want plastic bags to be removed. As quoted from state senator Alex Padilla, “We lived for thousands of years without single-use plastic bags. I think we will just be fine without them.”
Dear Alex Padilla,
I am writing this letter to express my support for your measure on a state wide ban on plastic bags in California. There is no doubt plenty of evidence about the consequences of plastic bags littering our environment and they must be done away with. There are more than a dozen municipals around the nation who have implemented this ban with positive results. It is time that California became the first state to implement this state wide ban and take a step towards being environmentally conscience.
I ask that you give your full support in this bill and ensure that it becomes law. I will do my best to rally support for this measure and pass on the word. The human race has survived without plastic bags before and we can do it again.
